How do I disinfect my well?

A well should be disinfected twice a year, once after snowmelt and once again in early fall. Each time, it is recommended to do a bacterial test to make sure the water is safe to drink.

Calculate the amount of bleach needed to disinfect the well:

Depth of well in feet minus static level (water level in the well after 12 hours of non-use)
Divide the result by 100 to get the number of gallons of bleach required (round up to the next whole number).

Exemple :

Rounding the result to the next unit, we obtain 3 gallons of bleach.

Method :

Clean the well using a dip net to remove foreign bodies and deposits.
Pour the bleach into the well.
With a garden hose, circulate the water for 1 hour or until you smell the bleach.
At the same time, rinse the inner wall of the well to completely mix the chlorine and water.
Turn on each faucet (hot and cold water), toilet, dishwasher, washer, outside tap, etc. one at a time.
When you smell bleach, close the valves and other accessories.
Let the bleach disinfect the well and pipes for 24 hours without turning on the water.
After 24 hours, run the outdoor faucet for 15 minutes every hour, until you no longer smell bleach and the water is clear and clean.
If the water flow is strong, let it run continuously until the water is clear, clean and odorless (always monitor the tap so you do not run out of water).
After a few days, you can do a test for bacteria.
